The city and its coastline

The general theme of the intensive course, running from May 15th - June 8th, is ‘The City and the Coastline’. Through seminars, field work and workshops students will be introduced to a wide range of issues associated with urban and economic development and how these impact on the waterfront / coastline.

Students are encouraged to actively participate in all elements of the course and are required to complete written assignments prior to and during the course. A general study room will be provided in the Geography Department where students can work and consult with each other.

Monday, May 20th Introductory lecture

Dr. Niamh M. Moore, Room E005, 11am – 12am

Students will be introduced to the course by outlining what is expected of them and the resources at their disposal. The historical evolution of Dublin as a city will also be discussed.
Tuesday, May 21st‘Redeveloping brownfields in coastal zones’

Workshops led by Prof. Roger Roberge, University of Ottawa

Workshop 1 – Identifying brownfields

Wednesday, May 22nd ‘The City and the Sea: Dublin Docklands and Port visit’

Field trip, meet at Geography Department, 10.30am

Dr. Niamh Moore will introduce students to the case study area, which acts as the interface between port and city in Dublin. The challenges facing the existing port area such as land reclamation, and the programme to encourage economic regeneration and combat social exclusion in the former docklands area will be discussed during this trip. Presentations by Dublin Port Company and the Dublin Docklands Development Authority will be included.

Field trip, meet at Geography Department, 10.30am

This trip will examine the development of the coastline from Balbriggan to Bray. The question will be posed as to whether management of the Dublin coastline has been successful or whether the coastline has become a victim of urban sprawl and become overdeveloped.
